Metro Southwest Extension Bankstown to Liverpool in Doubt

Thanks to the efforts of local residents and Bankstown MP Tania Mihailuk, the community of Yagoona including Gazzard Park has been saved from over-development plaguing the Sydenham to Bankstown Metro corridor.

The Restore Inner West Line & Save T3 Bankstown Line campaign has received confirmation from Transport for NSW that Yagoona is not part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project.

Prior to the 2019 NSW Election, Transport Minister Andrew Constance indicated that the Sydney Metro City & Southwest could be extended to Yagoona as the design of the Bankstown Interchange was proving difficult.

The T3 Bankstown Line was selected for conversion into Sydney Metro due to its brownfields and property development opportunities.

Future train services for stations west of Bankstown however continue to remain doubt with Transport for NSW yet to announce whether 19,000 commuters will have to interchange to reach the City Circle.

Draft options for Sydney Trains services west of Bankstown do not include direct trains to the Inner West and City for all stations.

The NSW Government’s announced extension of the Sydney Metro Southwest between Bankstown and Liverpool (via a new corridor not the existing T3 Line) also appears to have been cancelled.

Transport for NSW has indicated that it is investigating the option of trackless trams and rapid bus services to operate between Bankstown and Liverpool.

With much of the proposed Metro Southwest Extension Bankstown to Liverpool scoping area subject to flooding, local residents have previously expressed amenity concerns about a viaduct Metro line along Milperra and Newbridge Roads.

Restore Inner West Line & Save T3 Bankstown Line continues to call for improvements to public transport including the restoration of the direct train to City Circle via Regents Park (Inner West Line) from both Liverpool and Bankstown.

We remain concerned about the conversion of Sydenham to Bankstown into Metro and the ensuing over-development along the T3 Bankstown Line including at Chester Hill.

Signaling upgrades on the T3 Bankstown Line with the ability to deliver trains every 2 to 3 minutes should be implemented as the alternative to the Metro conversion which forces commuters to undertake multiple interchanges to reach the City Circle.
