‘Dumbest idea’: Proposal to shut nine Sydney train stations

Updated: Sep 8, 2023

West of Bankstown: A bid to permanently shut as many as nine Sydney train stations once the contentious southwest Metro opened has been revealed in sensitive documents to the former government.

The Daily Telegraph (Parramatta Advertiser) 6 September 2023

The Restore Inner West Line and Save T3 Bankstown Line community action group is delighted to hear news of the NSW Government announcing opposition to Transport for NSW/Sydney Metro plans to close stations (especially Birrong and Yagoona) in the West of Bankstown once Sydney Metro Southwest (Sydenham – Bankstown) opens in 2025.

For the first time in a decade, West of Bankstown commuters have some certainty for future services. This is encouraging as we approach the 10th anniversary of the 2013 timetable changes on 20th October.

We have written to Transport Minister Jo Haylen to seek formal clarification regarding the long-term future of the T2 City to Liverpool via Regents Park service and the 9 stations West of Bankstown (between Lidcombe – Bankstown – Cabramatta).

We would like to sincerely thank the 19,000 commuters in the West of Bankstown for a decade of strong support to bring back our train services.
